Sleep? What is that???

Melissa is doing so much better than I. She is usually the one that "tries" to get me out of bed. Our biggest trial right now is trying to get enough sleep to continue to function.

The kids continue to grow steadily. At last Thursday's appointment, I just realized that I did not update their weights, Ayden came in at a stunning 6 lbs. 15 oz. Breagan weighed in at 6 lbs. 5 oz. Carmen, at that time, weighed in at 3 lbs. 14 oz.

Because of Carmen's low birth weight she qualifies for having Home Health to come by regularly to check her progression. With the Home Health Nurse coming by yesterday afternoon, Carmen weighed in at 4 lbs. even. Carmen is able to maintain her body temperature and has even been requesting more to eat. She has increased from eating around 40 mil. every three hours to just a little over 50 mil. It is nice to have her making these decisions for herself instead of us forcing her.

There are truly good people in this world that are so willing to give of themselves and understand the true meaning of "the love of Christ." While in the Ronald MacDonald house we met so many people that would bring in food for the house residents. We witnessed brand new granite counter tops that were donated to the house by an individual. Numerous Boy and Girl Scout programs provided a service of one type or another to the house. Local businesses donated items, services, and food. I never fully understood the service or charity that the Ronald MacDonald house provides to families such as mine. All the house asks of it's residents is to help keep the house clean, be respectful of other residents, and small donation for the time that you stayed in the house. I would like to publicly thank my parents and my older sister for the donation that they gave to the Ronald MacDonald house in Melissa and I's behalf. We were not even asked for a donation as we left the house nor were we pressured. It was an honor to learn of this organization first hand and the love that they have for their fellow man.

Melissa and I think of everyone regularly and our thank you list grows by leaps and bounds. Most of the time we do not have the words of appreciation. Please know that love and gratitude we have for you and what you have done to help our family.

I will be returning to work within the next couple of days prompting a return visit from Melissa's mother. We are continually blessed with meals, assistance, and presents for the kids. We greatly appreciate everything that has come our way. We have been truly blessed with great friends and family.

Thursday April 24, 2008

We thought that we were doing good today. It was the kid's first Doctor visit in Burley and with the appointment at one this afternoon we actually made it on time. Can you imagine that with starting at 10 this morning to get the kids ready that we were asked to come in at eight for next week's appointment? Sorry, I just do not move that fast and unfortunately, it has been inherited.

We really must throw out a big YELL for the Henslee clan!!! Melissa's poor mother has been kept extremely busy the past several months helping Melissa and I in Boise. Yesterday afternoon Melissa's next younger sister gave birth to another baby boy. Bridger Ryan Dunn was born last night at 5:30 P.M. with Mom and Son going home tonight by 6:30 P.M. This makes five new grandkids for Melissa's parents in the past seven months. There must be something in that Hagerman water!

We keep learning what we are doing wrong or where we should have asked for help. People ask us all the time what they can do to help. There are a couple of things here to think about. Number one and probably the biggest... I am still learning how to say enough is enough and ask for help. Nothing personal, it has been a tough lesson to learn. Second, we are learning as we go. Back to today's mistake... We thought that it would be good to include Taylor with the babies appointment to try and keep her in the loop. It did not turn out bad, however, after a two hour appointment you can imagine how busy a four year old can get in a Doctor's Office. Live and learn.

Everyone's comments have been greatly appreciated and enjoyed. It gives me something to do while Melissa feeds babies. I enjoy reading the blogs, comments by blog readers, and think of other things to post. We are tired but are enjoying this precious time. Our gracious Father has blessed us with these precious Spirits and with that he has blessed us with a superior support group. We feel your love and appreciate the opportunity of sharing this AWESOME experience with you. May God bless you for your thoughts, prayers, and everything.

Wednesday April 23, 2008

I guess it is time to come clean... We were originally told last week that Carmen would be allowed to be released on Saturday. So now thinking back to the last post and about how Carmen lost weight, you can imagine our disappointment when we were not allowed to leave Boise on Sunday afternoon. We planned having Taylor's birthday party Saturday night and introducing the kids to Taylor. Well, as you know, things don't always go as we planned.

Carmen posted a nice gain on Sunday but jumped off the charts on Monday morning posting a 60 gram weight gain. The doctors were quite impressed and allowed us to leave the hospital with Carmen Monday afternoon. With our new found sense of energy, we hurried to pack and clean our room at the Ronald MacDonald House. By the time we made it out to Meridian to pick up Taylor and her stuff it was well after nine Monday night as we left Boise.

Melissa had dreams of her bed at home that kept her going. After a Doctor mandated stop in Hagerman we made it home about 1:00 A.M. Tuesday morning. The vehicles were unpacked and everything was dropped in the living room. Four months of luggage, baby equipment, and other miscellaneous stuff... What a mess and to tell the truth, we are still walking around it all.

With feedings every three hours you can imagine that you just get finished and if you are lucky you get about 1.5 hours of sleep. Melissa and I are trying to feed all three at once but it is proving a bit tough as I tend to sleep through anything/everything. Last night I mostly woke to find Melissa taking care of babies. I would get up just in time to do the tough stuff... Take one away, rock him/her to sleep, and put them back to bed. Pretty tough, I know, but someone has to keep up the team effort here. Thank heavens Melissa is as dedicated as she is. Otherwise, I may never hear the kids to wake up to feed them at all.

Breagan, Carmen, and Ayden ... left to right

This really puts things into perspective. Taylor, Breagan, Carmen, and Ayden. Melissa and I's FOUR kids!!! Still sinking in... Sorry.

Sunday April 20, 2008

It has been another one of those weekends. With hopes up and down we are feeling more and more connected with those in the NICU. We have made some really good friends and hope to continue getting updates on babies, families, and friends after we leave.

Carmen has had a slight set back. As Melissa was getting more and more comfortable with feeding the kids, either tandem or individually, little miss Carmen decided that she would play more than eat. With this in mind Carmen posted records LOSSES in weight. She lost 10 grams on Friday and then another 40 grams on Saturday morning. This prompted a visit from a couple of the NICU staff which offered some very meaningful ideas and insight. Melissa has since backed off on tandem feeding Carmen and the boys and feeding Carmen by herself. This has proven to pay off as Carmen was able to gain 20 grams through last night. The NICU Doctors would like to see her gain another day before getting to excited about anything.

Breagan and Ayden continue to enjoy their time with Mom and Dad. They keep us going all night long and my feeling of being tired has turned from a lack of sleep to just being tired in general. Melissa has had a little more time to adjust but has enjoyed catching me asleep her and there. Then Melissa gets the nurses in on the joke and everyone is against me. There comes that middle child syndrome once again... I swear it is all true!

Here is one of our special friends with the kids. Carmen is on your left, then Ayden, and on the right is Breagan.

Carmen enjoying her bath today. She was quite fussy until she was put under the nice heat lamps and in the warm water. Then she melted away to another place... Melissa described it as a beach with white sand, the clear light blue water slowly inching it's way up the beach, and the warm sun rays beating down making your skin turn a nice golden brown color... Then Melissa broke the news to me that she was describing our next vacation away from the kids... Right???

This is the love of a brother and sister... Melissa was able to "tactfully" take this picture one day while feeding Breagan and Carmen. The kids do this on a regular basis. Thank heavens Melissa was able to get the picture.

And so concludes another day. As I keep telling Taylor, "We are just one day closer." We have been blessed beyond our wildest ideas, dreams, and prayers. We continually thank our Father in Heaven for the good people that we have met, will meet, and already know. We know that it is only through Him that gave us life and the ability of knowing such GREAT people. We cannot begin to thank people... So many have given us things for the babies... Hand made quilts from their mother that has now passed on to greater serving ventures, diapers from people that know we could never have enough, outfits for the kids from those who know that a washer/dryer cannot stay unfilled, words of comfort/wisdom from those that have experienced similar adventures, and the list continues to grow. I wish that I could thank each and every one of you for everything that you have helped to bless us. Melissa and I shall try to keep the thank you notes coming out but in the event that we do not get a card to someone please know that your efforts have not been in vain. We know who that this has been a monumental adventure and effort. I have thought this many times and have never wanted to quote it because I am DEFINITELY not going to get political. I am not sure that I ever imagined understanding the validity of this quote. However, I am going to change some of the wording on purpose because I do not agree with the majority of the other things this person endorses.... Have I made my point clear that I am not affiliating myself with this person??? It has not taken just a couple of people to get Melissa, Taylor, myself, and the babies to where we are currently. It has taken an entire community of family and friends to get us here. (Not a village, we live in America and we call them communities, towns, cities, and so forth.)

Thank you everyone, good things are still to come!!!

Friday April 18, 2008

It still ceases to amaze me how time just keeps going by faster and faster. Taylor and I have been in Burley since Sunday night. Taylor is starting to feel better and is recovering from her ear infections. Thank heavens Melissa has had her mom with her through this past week to assist with the kids.

Melissa has been able to take the boys back into the NICU to be with Carmen. However, Melissa has had to sign papers with St. Luke's saying that she will not expose the boys to anyone under the age of 18. Once this happens then the boys will not be able to go into the NICU anymore. We are trying to keep Taylor at a distance for now hoping that once we know more about Carmen's debut from the NICU that we can then let Taylor meet the kids for the first time. It has been over three weeks since Taylor has seen her mother, since January 29th since Melissa has been home, and almost four months that this has all been going on. Amazing as it has definitely been an emotional roller coaster for everyone.

This past week while home I have had the great opportunity of speaking with several other mother's of multiple babies. Everyone's experience is different, similar, and exciting to hear. Some experiences I thank the good Lord for not allowing us to experience but all in all, it is nice to compare. Melanie, Alice, and Sue, thank you so much for taking time to communicate with me and sharing your words of wisdom. I have tried to convey to Melissa your stories, words of encouragement, and willingness to assist.

Some of things that I am trying to get Melissa to do for everyone is post more pictures, I hear she has some good ones. I would also like Melissa to share her events that happened on March 5th as the babies were born, we will probably have to break that one up into chapters. Also, hopefully some really good news after this weekend... Time will tell...

Monday April 14, 2008

Being first is just not all that it is cracked up to be. This time I tried to be last... I just got our taxes sent off today, sorry Aunt Eileen.

I apologize for not updating everyone lately but you will soon understand why... As soon as I hit Boise Thursday night we started by rooming in with Breagan in the NICU. Breagan was great all night long and we enjoyed being with him.

We were startled Friday morning to hear that Ayden's hernia surgery was moved up and that we needed to meet with the Doctor within the half hour. Shortly after we sent Ayden off for his surgery it came time for Breagan's whittling experience, he was circumcised. Carmen was hopefully enjoying her time in the crib by herself knowing that she would not have either experience.

Ayden has a difficult time waking from the surgery. Once awake we could tell by his stats that he must have been in pain for a while. He looked good, he slept good, and he ate good. Everything worked out good from the surgery.

Breagan recovered nicely from his little ordeal. He impressed the nurses and they could not stop talking about him. If he only knew, but then again, the details would make this blog a little R-rated. Carol, the nurse from Friday even had me blushing, if you could believe that? All in good fun though...

Carmen, Breagan, Melissa, and I got to room in together again Saturday night in the NICU. Not that Carmen is being released anytime soon, but a formality that is now out of the way. The Doctors took her off of the caffeine to observe her for the next five days. We will see what happens these next couple of weeks with her.

Once we went into the "rooming in" with Carmen and Breagan, Breagan was no longer considered a patient. He was along for the ride and is currently with Melissa at the Ronald McDonald house. Today Melissa received another couple of visitors. Melissa's mother is now with her at the house and helping Melissa as the other visitor is ... (drum roll) ... AYDEN!!! Ayden has recovered good enough to be released!

Carmen is in the NICU by herself for now. Time will tell but at least we are making headway. As I keep telling Taylor, we are one day closer...

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday. ~Author Unknown

We are all closer today than we were yesterday. Melissa is and has been so very strong. However, everything is catching up to her. Just as she is being a mother to our children and trying to do everything in her power to do what is best, it is time for her to be taken care of also. Melissa has a cold that has caught up to her. With Kathy there to be with Melissa, the circle of life continues... there truly is nothing like the love of a mother to heal all. The Good Lord sure knew what he was doing when he created families, friends, and all others to help one another.

Thank you one and all...

A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all other virtues. ~ Cicero

Wednesday April 9, 2008

Today has been a very busy day for us. We were told that the boys were possibly going to be discharged Saturday! We would do what the NICU calls rooming in Friday night and then go from there. Well, that plan has been totally revamped, thrown out, and forgotten. I think we are on Plan Z now….

We’ve known the babies would be discharged at different times. Having being told that we might have both boys discharged together was exhilarating news. It would be tough going back and forth from the Ronald McDonald House to the hospital but we’d make it work. Well, due to RSV season Taylor has been unable to see her siblings. Now, we are told that if one or two babies are discharged we cannot have Taylor around them at all. If the babies were to be around a child they could not be brought back into the NICU with me. This causes a major hardship for us.

As a mother my heart is broken because I cannot be with Taylor. I/We have to choose between our children. It has been so long and difficult for Taylor being away from home and from one of her parents. She’s been in Burley with Scott the last couple of days and she been so excited to see me again. That’s what she’s talked about since the moment she left. Scott and I are heartbroken to tell her that she won’t be seeing her mother or siblings like she’s been planning on. I’m sitting here crying as I write this because I know how disappointed she will be when the news is broken to her. I can’t imagine the hurt this may cause her. It has been very difficult for her and confusing during the last three months. I will have to stop writing about it or I may break the laptop from my tears.

Breagan will possibly be the first to be discharged. We are planning on (remember this entire plan is tentative and can change at moment’s notice) “rooming in” tomorrow night. Ayden’s hernia surgery will probably happen sooner than later. Both boys did not pass their car seat test so that could change the plan as well. Carmen is weeks away from her discharge. However, the best news of the day is that she is out of her isolet! She is now back between her two brothers in a crib!

We were also getting ready to move to a room with a “view”. But, it’s not going to happen either. We are going to stay where we’ve been since they were born. It has been a very busy day with so much going on that it’s hard to make sense of everything. We’re planning on “rooming in” with Breagan tomorrow and possible discharge for him Friday or Saturday. Ayden’s discharge date is unknown due to the flunked car seat test and his hernia. Carmen is eating more by mouth and that is progress towards getting her feeding tube out. Her big test now is making sure she maintains body temperature and not lose any weight. If either of those happens she will go back to an isolet.

I’m trying to focus on the great news that Breagan (and possibly Ayden) will be coming out of the NICU soon. I’m also trying to focus on the great news that Carmen has progressed to an open crib. My heart aches for Taylor but I’m trying to be positive; right now it’s just difficult. I’m grateful for our families, and for my mom & sisters who have really been there for Taylor. Scott and I couldn’t have done it without their help. Check out the great picture of all three babies together again. It is a wonderful, wonderful sight!

Tuesday April 8, 2008

Unfortunately, Melissa and I did not have a chance to talk last night. We talked for a few minutes yesterday morning so I guess that will be the update for today.

Ayden is doing better as a result from the transfusion. He appears to be doing better with his oxygen saturation but still has to be prodded to eat. You would hardly think so seeing as how he is over six pounds now. Ayden's skin has a red appearance to it from the transfusion but this is normal. Evidently it is that much more prominent as he lays next to his fair skinned brother, Breagan.

Breagan is doing awesome. He no longer has the NG tube and is eating like a hungry little bear. It does not matter if he gets his food from a bottle or Melissa, he eats good. Breagan is just over five pounds and growing.

Carmen is still progressing. Her progress is a little slower but none the less, it is still progress.

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement for Melissa. You could not have hit it more on the head and we took your words as a confirmation of our responsibilities as parents to our children. It has been so easy to sit back and let the medical personnel take care of the babies. Up until now we have placed our complete faith in their hands and respect their decisions. As we move forward, Melissa and I understand better now that we need to gradually move the responsibility of kids from the medical personnel to ourselves. Of course this is easy for me to say as I am not with Melissa in Boise. However, we recognize this opportunity as we move towards the overall goal of bringing everyone home.

I am continually amazed by the amount of people that write comments on the blog, send me e-mails, and talk to me personally. I appreciate the opportunity of knowing such GREAT people and considering so many friends and family. To put it frankly I quote :

Words are easy, like the wind; Faithful friends are hard to find. - William Shakespeare

To those we know, we love you... To those we don't know, we love you... but let us meet sometime as we have much to catch up on.

Sunday April 6, 2008

I hope that I can convey some of the emotions, fears, and just over all frustrations of the day. I know that I felt something completely different than Melissa and not near as intense. Only Melissa can discuss what was going through her mind this morning.

Our day began the same as the last several days. Melissa has been told from the get go that the best thing for these babies was to get a schedule going that works and STICK to it! Melissa is very well structured and has found what works for her. She has been getting up at six in the morning, getting ready, and over to the hospital to start feeding Ayden at eight. Carmen would be next at nine and then Breagan at nine thirty. Taylor and I would get up, get ready, and be waiting for Melissa in the NICU waiting room by ten. We would spend the next hour talking about how the kids did the night before and then the feeding would begin again at eleven.

We would then meet Melissa shortly after one for lunch and then it would be my turn to feed the kids with a bottle. Melissa and I would then meet in the waiting room again, trade off Taylor, and then Melissa would go into feed the kids. Dinner would be around seven thirty for the three of us and then I would start at nine for the nightly feeding and be back to the house by eleven. It was a good schedule that worked for us and the babies.

With all of that in mind I now continue with the rest. We have been having a lot of new nurses that have not understood the schedule nor appreciate the fact that Melissa could actually tie up every waking moment feeding kids. Last night we had a nurse that did not adhere to the schedule and decided to just plainly do her own thing. Then at seven this morning there was another new nurse that tried to continue what she had been told from the night nurse. Melissa showed up at eight expecting the usual and things just went down hill from there.

Those of you that know Melissa know that it is pretty tough to upset her or make her mad but it happened. I am not sure on the full details but when I saw Melissa at nine thirty I could see the fire in her eyes. Basically, I knew better to be quiet and listen than to say a word. Melissa and I had the opportunity to talk with the P.A. on an unrelated issue but also got to explain the frustration going on. We felt awful for saying anything negative but felt that there had to be something done, period.

Now for another stone in our road today... Ayden had a terrible night due to his continuing de-sat. The oxygen in his blood would keep falling causing his alarms to go off. After a blood test this morning, the PA thought that Ayden would benefit from a blood transfusion. Ayden was basically Anemic causing the oxygen to not be able to adhere to the hemoglobin to circulate through his body. Mind you, this is my lay man's terms and my understanding of what the PA told us.

We had to get information, make a decision, and sign the release for the transfusion. It was just one of those days. Of course there are a lot more details but this gives you an overall idea. I know I am exhausted with the events from the day, traveling home, and being away from Melissa and everything going on. Right now Taylor and I are waiting for the newest details from the transfusion and any other news that Melissa may have.

Breagan is a little pig. He just inhales his bottle and sounds like a little piggy routing around while he takes his bottle. It makes me giggle and have fun with him. It is a joy to feed Breagan and spend that time with him. When I would go to burp him I would lay him on my left shoulder. Breagan would then lift his head or turn his head so that we could see each other eye to eye. It is the simple things, right?

Carmen took her first bottle from me this afternoon. Carmen did awesome! She drank the whole thing and acted like she could have taken some more. She too likes to look at me while I burp her. Carmen changed the most during my time away. She appears to have filled out and just looks like a pretty little girl.

Melissa is trying her hardest to do her best. It is time for some prayers, thoughts, and well wishes in her behalf. I thought that I burned the candle at both ends pretty good. However, she is doing a pretty good job of it herself. By the time she gets to bed, she is up every three hours to pump, and then spends most of her awake time at the hospital taking care of babies. She is a very good example of a mother doing the best that she can to take care of those entrusted to her. Please feel free to drop Melissa a quick note as I know she would love to hear from anyone.

Friday April 4, 2008

With me being in Boise now, Melissa is feeling as though I need to update things. However, seeing as how it has been a while since my last post I can appreciate the opporunity of providing a little information once again.

The kids are doing pretty good. They had their four week birthday Wednesday and turn a month old tomorrow.

Ayden is continuing a nice growth trend. As he lays down he appears to carry all his weight in his face as he exhibits quite the chipmunk cheeks. Either way, we appreacite his modest growth trend. He is currently just under six pounds.

Breagan is trying to keep up with his brother. He tries to spread out his weight a little more evenly. We did notice how his hair is growing quite unevenly, so basically for now he will have a mohawk until things grow in just a little better. One of our nurses tonight, she was with the babies when they were first born, noticed his hairline and had a GREAT time teasing me for my gift to the boys.

Carmen conitnues to have her little spells of apnea. She really eats well from Melissa at least once a day but it seems to tire her out pretty good. We try to leave her alone for the most part for the rest of the day so that she may continue to get her beauty sleep. She does like to show the smile that she received from her mother at the most opportune times.

The kids had ultrasounds done of their heads looking for any abnormalities. The boy's have come back normal and we are still waiting to hear the results of Carmen's.

There is talk of Ayden being released towards the end of next week. We are not taking them serious just yet as there is also talk of holding Ayden until Breagan is ready and realeasing the boys at the same time. Ayden has also followed the trend of his sister and may need to go back onto caffiene. If he were to do that it would delay him a bit longer. Either way, the good Lord is looking out afer the kids because of your diligent prayers, thoughts, and warm wishes. Please feel free to leave Melissa a comment as she has been away from home since January 29th. Taylor will more than likely be heading home with me on Sunday but Melissa will be here until we all come home together, for good!

Tuesday April 1, 2008

Yesterday was supposed to be the day we planned to deliver the triplets. Not their due date but it was the day that the doctor had penciled us in for. That sure didn’t happen! I can’t believe that it’s been almost a month since they were born. Some days it seems like yesterday and other days seem like years ago. Whenever the NICU alarms went off calling for a team to go on a C-section, I thought to myself, “that could have been me”.

All three babies are doing ok. Carmen has been off and on oxygen since yesterday morning, and the boys are doing a good job of feeding and growing. A mother that I have met here gets to take her baby home tomorrow. They have been her for over two months; I’m so excited for her and her family. I have to remind myself that someday I too will be able to take home my babies. I had an interesting visit with the nurse coordinator today. She asked me to speak to a mother who is expecting triplets in the antepartum unit. I don’t mind doing that however I feel very inadequate because I’m still unsure about everything and I’m asking everyone for advice myself. I have to laugh about it or else I might go into panic mode!

Once again I appreciate all of the support and prayers. Even though things are going well I continue to pray and hope that you remember us in yours as well. It is hard to ask for something so personal but I know it is because of your love, thoughts, prayers, and support that the triplets are doing as well as they are. I can’t say thank you enough! THANK YOU….again.
